Brought to you in association with Ladbrokes Bingo

It’s official: I am getting old. With four weddings on the cards this year and three hen dos, I have already been on rather a few nights out with the girls. And, while they were brilliant fun, they have also left me a little bit broken.

As I massage my sore feet (I’m not used to long periods in heels anymore) and mourn the loss of my stamina, I’m not surprised to see the results of a survey recently conducted by Ladbrokes Bingo, showing that 70% of women would prefer a night in with their friends to an evening out on the town.

It’s partly the cost of a night out these days which puts me off; knowing three sips of wine in the pub equates to at least the same price as half a bottle at home. And while it’s fun to get glammed up every once in a while, it’s also equally enjoyable to take off that underwired bra, slob into some elasticated jogging bottoms and snuggle into a dressing gown.

My most recent night out was just last weekend. It began with champagne and civilised chat and descended into drunken dancing and the hangover from hell the following day. Yes, it was tremendous good fun, but my body reminded me I am no longer 20 and am out of practice when it comes to partying.

ChampagneFor me, there are a few ingredients needed to the perfect night in with girlfriends. They are:

Tasty snacks

Posh crisps (preferably salt and vinegar) are a must. Taken a step further, nachos with melted cheese and jalapenos are even better. It’s not a proper night in if dips aren’t included. And, of course, the occasional olive also goes down a treat.

A bottle of something cold

I’m not a big red wine drinker, as I prefer the delicious crispness of a lovely white (my absolute favourite is this Sauvignon Blanc from Oyster Bay). Failing wine, a cold gin and tonic also does the trick. Or – pushing the boat out – a fancy cocktail.

An easy supper

It has to be something easy to cook (I’d rather chat than hang out in the kitchen) and easy to eat. I love fajitas for their shareability and, of course, you can never go wrong with pizza.

Chocolate and cheese

Post-supper chocolate and cheese is a must, especially if a film’s on the evening plan. Everyone knows you need something to pick at while you’re watching that film about love highbrow art house movie.

Entertainment

Whether it’s cheesy Saturday night TV, a cultured film or just some brilliant music, some form of entertainment is needed once the wine starts to soak in.

These are my ingredients to the perfect night in with the girls – what are yours?
