School uniform. Whatever your opinion about it, if you’re a parent of a child going to school in the UK, chances are you’ll be knee deep in it right about now.
When I went to primary school many moons ago we didn’t have a uniform, so I still find it a bit weird to see little kids dressed up in such smart gear as they trot off to school.
The thing is, these little kids have always been strangers to me. I’ve just passed them in the street or seen the First Day At School photos their mums and dads have posted on Facebook. Until now. Because, in September, that will be me.
I blame the pregnancy hormones, but the photos in this post made me shed a little tear. This definitely feels like the biggest milestone yet…
Frog has the choice of a pinafore dress, skirt or trousers, worn with a long or short sleeved shirt. She also has to wear a jumper or cardigan with her new school’s crest on it, along with a tie.
I still can’t get my head around my little dot of a girl – who is barely four – wearing a tie. She looks grown up enough as it is in her crisp white shirt, skirt and school shoes.
We sourced our uniform staples from the school uniform at BHS. School uniform doesn’t come cheap, but we managed to get three skirts, two pairs of trousers, a pinafore dress with shirt set, and four shirts for a very reasonable £48.50.
At the moment, Frog isn’t as keen on the trousers as the pinafore dress and skirts, as seen from this photo:
The matter of the tie didn’t go down too well either, because after ten minutes she was asking to take it off. It seems my four year old needs to get used to having her top button done up, something totally alien to her at the moment.
Still, the trousers and skirts all came with adjustable waistbands, so at least she’s comfy on the bottom half. And the material on all of the garments wasn’t scratchy – I was expecting Frog to complain about the fabric being “itchy” because it’s so different from her usual jersey t’shirts, but she didn’t mind it at all.
Now I just need to come to terms with the fact that in less than three weeks she’s going to be wearing this lot Monday to Friday. But, for now, if you’ll excuse me I’m going off to bury my head in the sand a little bit longer.

With thanks to BHS for sending the uniform staples featured in this post, for the purpose of review. All opinions, words and pictures remain my own.
Oh my goodness, this made me all emotional too! Cherry doesn’t start till next year, I’m still pretending it’s not happening ever though! x
Ah, she looks sooooo cute! Although I do think from a comfort point of view the school should reconsider the tie! I never heard of a kid that small wearing one. My Roo has been made to wear a uniform since preschool, so we felt a bit robbed on this front. I’ve even seen two year olds in uniform which is really bizarre !
Aw, bless her she looks adorable!
Don’t blame you for burying your head, my biggest boy goes next September and refuse to accept he’s so close to school age already! It all comes round far too quick 🙁 Must enjoy the rest of the summer whilst we can 🙂

Such lovely photos! It is such a big step when they start school and introduces the whole family to a new way of life.
I was surprised to see her in a tie. Very few primary schools have ties these days, but she does look very cute and very smart.
