Leg in cast

I’m not being a drama queen when I say the last few days have been intense. Incredibly, stressfully, sometimes tear-jerkingly intense.

In fact, if it wasn’t for my parents whisking Frog and I off to their house for the week, I’m not sure how I would have coped. I imagine the (self-proclaimed) Northern Love Machine would have returned from work and found me rocking in a corner somewhere, my broken child crying even louder than her mother.

I expect no one would describe having a child in a cast as “fun”. Add being 25 weeks pregnant to the mix and you have a whole new level of physical challenge, carrying an almost-four year old around in a heavy leg cast while feeling particularly bulky yourself. And add the demands of work on top of that and you get a picture of where I’ve been at stress-wise the past few days.

I didn’t start this post to moan though. Well, kind of. But I mean, I know there are plenty more people far worse off than us and, ultimately, a broken leg will mend, so we are lucky.  Continue reading »

Changing habits – the No Junk Challenge

Healthy eating

We like food in our house. Food is right up there with sunshine and holidays, as far as we’re concerned. We also rather like cooking, and the odd bit of baking too.

When Frog was tiny we went down the Baby-led Weaning route. She’s always been fiercely independent and wouldn’t even let me put a spoonful of medicine in her mouth, so the thought of battling with purees terrified me.

This means that Frog has always eaten what we’ve eaten. The idea of cooking a separate tea for her and then cooking again later in the evening did not appeal to my lazy side.  Continue reading »

On accepting (and trying to love) my changing body shape

I think it’s one of life’s great ironies that the two periods in my adulthood when I have treated my body as a temple have been when my stomach has absolutely no chance of getting any flatter.

With this pregnancy, just as when I was pregnant with Frog, I’ve found myself eating more healthily, getting more exercise and making sure I go to bed at a reasonable hour. It seems I need the excuse of growing another human to take proper care of myself.

I’ve never been a massive health freak. I find the gym boring and conversations about diets dull. At university I joined the Yoga club and did three sessions of Yoga a week (the relaxation bit at the end was my favourite), along with enduring a regular visit to the gym to try and balance out my excessive student alcohol consumption. But that’s as far as it went. Continue reading »

Curing myself of a cold

Cold

This is me a couple of weeks ago. I was feeling VERY sorry for myself. I don’t “do” quiet illness. When I feel rough, everyone knows about it – including Instagram.

I was halfway through a radio shift, hence the ear-wear, and struggling with a sore nose, scratchy throat and aching joints. I was also feeling rather tired, a mixture of being up since 4am and waking up every hour throughout the night to blow my nose.  Continue reading »

Get firm abs while watching Breaking Bad. No, really.

Breaking Bad, exercise, Netflix

It’s no secret that I am not a huge fan of exercise. OK, that may not be strictly true. I love Zumba, look forward to my Yoga classes and enjoy swimming. But at this time of year? When it’s pouring down outside and the cold weather has seeped into my bones? All I really want to do is lie on the sofa watching yet another episode of Breaking Bad.

Recently I joined the Netflix Stream Team. The perfect partner to indulge my love of the sofa, I thought. I received a kit so I could perfect my Netflix viewing, watching Walt and Jessie from my new iPad connected to my TV via a fancy cable. There was even popcorn. Settling down to begin my Netflix marathon I found an email.

#GetFitWithNetflix was the heading. Hang on a minute, I thought. This wasn’t part of the deal. They want me to get fit? I thought Netflix was all about watching my favourite TV shows and films in the comfort of my own home? What’s all this “Get Fit” nonsense?  Continue reading »

A solution to the witching hour cooking problem

What’s your worst time of day as a parent? For me, it’s that dreaded period between 4pm and 5.30pm. The so-called “witching hour”.

In our house, witching hour goes something like this: I get the ingredients out to start cooking tea. Frog wants milk. I get her milk, to keep her out of the way while I cook tea. I chop up a carrot. Frog wants chocolate. I say no. Frog has a tantrum. I attempt to finish up chopping said carrot while heating oil in the pan. My phone rings. I need to send an urgent work email. Frog is still having a tantrum. The carrot is still waiting to be chopped. Continue reading »

photo (33)This is a pair of brand new, beautiful new trainers I bought a month ago on impulse, as I vowed to myself to get back into shape. Guess how much I’ve used them?

Yep – none. Zilch, nada. Not one tiny bit.

In fact, they’re still wrapped up all shiny and new in the box, with the price tag firmly attached. Oops.

The thing is, I really WANT to get fit again. I do. I look down at my rounding tummy and see extra wobbles where there weren’t before and it makes me feel, well, a bit flat. (Not flat in the flat stomach sense of the word, unfortunately.) But I just can’t seem to find the time, energy and motivation to do what it takes to get off my backside.  Continue reading »
