Escaping the darkness

I have jars aplenty. Cushions are scattered around my house in abundance. Candles line shelves and framed photos sit on cupboards. But the one vital interiors accessory we are missing from our home at the moment? Lights.

A couple of months ago I invested in a new floor lamp. The day it was delivered, two other lamps in the room promptly broke. With much of our stuff still in storage since our move to South Devon a few months ago, I couldn’t find one of the hundreds of strings of fairy lights I know we own. So, we are currently flitting between hospital-like bright lights and sheer darkness.  Continue reading »

Treating myself, just because

savings, shopping, treats

Do you ever find that, as a parent, you put yourself at the bottom of the list? I do. Constantly. Whether it’s drinking a cup of tea while it’s still hot or giving myself the luxury of more than two minutes in the shower, I’m not very good at being kind to myself. To be honest, I always think “be kind to yourself” sounds a bit sappy. I’m more of the “buckle down and get on with it” school of thought. I blame it on my northern husband.

I was recently given the opportunity to test out the site Topcashback. As the name suggests, you earn cash back on your purchases through the site. Lots of retailers are signed up – from fashion brands to utilities companies. Each retailer offers different amounts of money back, from the odd percent right up to as much as 20 percent. The money comes from the commission they pay Topcashback for your custom (you click a link to their site through Topcashback), some of which is then paid back into your own account. Anyway, I had planned to buy something for Christmas – maybe a present for my three year old or something to decorate the house with. But I didn’t.  Continue reading »

Granny chic and a bit of ethical shopping

Christmas shopping, ethical shopping, independent traders

There’s something very pleasing about shopping with independent traders. For me, this is the time of year when the lesser-known brands come into their own, offering items that are a little bit different, made with love, and perfect for giving at Christmas.

If you’re a fan of farmers markets, craft markets and those gorgeous independent shops dotted around high streets up and down the country, you will love MyHigh.St.

I discovered this website while browsing online recently, searching for pretty interiors accessories with a difference. It features products made by independent traders based from the across the UK and comes from a team based in (my beloved) West Country. It’s ethical, often handmade, often vintage, pretty, delicious and vibrant.  Continue reading »

Summer’s over, but that’s OK

September

When we moved to this little corner of Devon at the beginning of the school holidays it all felt very exciting. The sun was shining hot heat over the pretty hills and the sandals and strappy tops on the high street made it feel like a holiday.

Two weeks passed and the holiday vibe was replaced with something else.

My (teacher) husband was off work and my three year old’s pre-school was closed for the holidays. We had days out and trips away, but I still had to work, albeit from home. Life was still exciting, but I craved a bit of stability and routine. I think that craving was partly due to the fact we are only temporarily renting our house, so it felt even more like a holiday home.  Continue reading »

A bit of cute – personalised art for Frog’s room

Wall art for a child's room

My three year old’s bedroom has never had a “theme”. But, as we start to look for somewhere more permanent to live, I’ve become a bit obsessed with planning her new bedroom. And it’s all going to start with this piece of beautiful personalised button art from Ella and Oscar.

Arriving in a lovely plain white chunky frame, the letter “F” is made up of gorgeously bright buttons which look stylish and fun. I love the clean white background against the buttons – and Frog loves that she recognises her favourite letter every day when she wakes up.  Continue reading »

Pretty stuff for our home for under £30

decor, homes, interiors

I make no secret of the fact I am a bit addicted to the social shopping site Shopcade. As an ambassador for the brand, I can legitimately call my browsing and list-creating “work”. *ahem*

Anyway, recently my eye has been drawn to all brands interior. I am lusting (I hate myself for saying I’m lusting over a candle, but it’s true) over cushions and candles, jars and jugs. I can’t help it. It’s the house moving / buying / settling thing.

Like lots of other families, we’re constantly looking for ways to save money. I actually prefer upcycled furniture in the main, so I’m happy to buy second hand and this is a decision I make regardless of money. But when it comes to candles and pretty things, I don’t mind splashing out a bit to finish a room off. Continue reading »

Home, interiors, pretty stuff

I’m a bit addicted to interiors at the moment. I’m enjoying perusing various blogs and magazines for inspiration as we make some plans about a new home which may be on the horizon.

I like nothing more than a pretty cushion and cosy throw, much to the dismay of my textiles-hating husband. The (self-proclaimed) Northern Love Machine is excited by technology and…. yeah, mainly technology. Continue reading »

Ashburton, Devon, family, Home

One of my favourite things about the past couple of weeks has been exploring our new Devon home.

We’re currently living in a rented place, while we go through the whole house buying process (I don’t want to write anything about that yet for fear of tempting fate).

Our rented home is in a little town called Ashburton, nestled against the edge of beautiful Dartmoor, a 20 minute drive from the coast. Ashburton is a pretty place, full of independent shops and bunting. It’s a town, but feels more like a village really. Continue reading »

Toddler desk

It’s been just over two weeks and we are finally unpacked and organised in our new home. Although we probably won’t be here for too long (it’s a temporary stop-gap until we hopefully buy a place), it’s still important we make it feel ours.

Part of that process has been choosing a few new pieces of furniture to replace tired or broken bits that we no longer had use for. First on that list was a new desk for Frog.  Continue reading »

Devon

A few days ago I had a wobble.

I worried that we’d uprooted our three year old from everything she knew and that she wasn’t happy. I over-thought everything and, rather than just cracking on with the business in hand of settling in, I panicked.

Tantrums are exhausting, but tantrums every ten minutes are MIND BLOWINGLY exhausting. I was tired, unsettled, still living amongst boxes and not entirely sure we’d done the right thing by moving 200 miles from Berkshire to South Devon.  Continue reading »
