Party outfits for new mums

If you thought dressing a bump was hard then try dressing a post-pregnancy body. Seriously, I’m having some major clothing issues at the moment. I’ve had more important things to worry about than working on a washboard stomach, so most of my clothes are still a little too snug. And with Christmas just around the corner the search for a party dress for a new mum is ON.

But perhaps the search is over. And the answer to that festive dilemma is perhaps in an unlikely place.

I’m already a fan of some of the everyday clothes on offer from George at ASDA – my beloved yoga pants being a prime example. But did you know you can also find some pretty cool party dresses there too? And not just any old party dresses – party dresses suitable for new and expectant mums alike.

Maternity party outfits

If I was still pregnant then I’d go for one of these dresses from the maternity section. I love the plain black maxi and would dress it up with a statement necklace for extra bling factor. I’m also a sucker for a bit of leopard print so the leopard print tunic dress would probably make it onto my list too – at £8 it’s a steal. Continue reading »

A snoop around the baby’s nursery

Baby's nursery mint and yellow

One of the most exciting things about preparing for this baby has, for me, been decorating the baby’s bedroom. When I was pregnant with Frog we lived in a rented cottage, so couldn’t splash paint on the walls or hang pictures. Although she had a lovely bedroom it wasn’t necessarily the bedroom she’d have had if we’d owned the house.

One of my freelance gigs is writing the interiors pages for a magazine. It means that I spend a lot of time oggling beautiful blogs, interiors magazines and nosing round various shops to look at the latest trends, be inspired by new colour pairings and generally make long lists of things I want to do in my own home (much to the dismay of my husband).

So you can understand why I was so excited about decorating the nursery. Continue reading »

My grandmother’s chair

There’s one piece of furniture I always wanted but never had as a new mum last time around: a nursing chair. Telling myself it was a waste of money as it wouldn’t be used long enough to warrant the expense, I never splashed out on one. Instead, I’d sit perched on the edge of the bed, or on the futon in Frog’s bedroom, feeding her in the middle of the night, trying not to get back ache.

This time around I was determined to have a chair in our new baby’s nursery. Even though the baby won’t be sleeping in there at first, I wanted a quiet place where I could do feeds without having to find a corner of a bed to perch on.

The thing is, I’m not a huge fan of new furniture. I like pieces that tell a story and, if it’s personal, then all the better. All of the nursing chairs I’d looked at online seemed ludicrously expensive or just not to my taste – too bulky, too mumsy, too ugly, or just not quite right. I know, I’m possibly a little too fussy.

And then I remembered my grandmother’s chair. My beautiful Nana died earlier this year. She was funny, kind and the best baker I’ve ever known. Time spent at Nana’s house in Derby was always fun. When my Dada was alive they would bicker with each other and he would make us all laugh. He’d tell Nana off for the occasional swear (“Ooh you naughty bugger!”) and she’d scold him back for having the telly on too loud.  Continue reading »

My husband and daughter, the rock stars

Baby Banz

I can’t be the only mum who has serious clothes envy of their kid. My daughter has a pretty rocking wardrobe. From cute handmade dresses and knitted jumpers, made by both of her grandmas, to bright t’shirts and colour clashing leggings and skirts, she certainly doesn’t want for clothes. I regularly wish I had outfits as fun as hers…

What to wear to a summer wedding when you’re eight months pregnant

Summer wedding maternity wearI’ve been preoccupied for the past couple of months. Every spare moment – on the loo, waiting for the kettle to boil, the moments before sleep at night – has been spent searching. It’s been a long and arduous hunt but, finally, it’s reached an end: I’ve found an outfit to wear to a wedding later this summer, when I will be around eight months pregnant.

Wedding outfits stress me out generally anyway – there’s a certain irony in the fact I found getting an outfit for my wedding the easiest of all. As a guest I always worry that I’ll be a) over-dressed b) under-dressed or c) wearing something someone else is wearing. Wear the right outfit and you can feel pretty good. Wear the wrong outfit and you can feel pretty bad. For me, it’s that simple.  Continue reading »

The living room revamp and a sneak at my shelfie

living room redecoration

This is the first time in forever we’ve had a room that we can say, hand on heart, is completely “ours”.

Before moving into this house we’d always lived in rented places – a flat, then a cottage, then a little house while we went through the process of buying where we are now. Our rooms were filled with second-hand furniture given to us by kind relatives, because all our money went on saving for a huge mortgage deposit.

Our homes were loved and comfortable but not necessarily entirely of our own choosing. We couldn’t paint the walls or look for beautiful furniture to upcycle, because we didn’t know where we were going to end up and didn’t own the houses we lived in. If we ended up in a tent somewhere, that huge sofa purchase would have seemed like a hasty purchase, you know?  Continue reading »

The corners of my kitchen

Kitchen corners

I’m going to admit something here: I love a good nosey around other people’s spaces.

It’s true. That picture you put on Instagram? Secretly I’m peaking past the foreground of your photo, trying to work out what design your wallpaper is and if that table is an Annie Sloan upcycle number. Sorry.

I put it largely down to my interiors obsession of late. I say “of late”, I mean “of the past two years”.

Ever since we decided to save up to buy our own place I’ve had big plans. They mainly involve pinning ideas on Pinterest, reading interiors magazines and blogs and deciding which trends I like (chevron – tick) and which will be a passing craze not worth bothering about (clashing florals – bleurgh). Their Nibs London

A couple of weeks ago a beautiful parcel arrived through our door. It’s the kind of PR sample I love, all wrapped up in soft tissue paper and presented in a swish fabric tote. This was my first experience of Their Nibs, a brand specialising in vintage style children’s clothing.

To be honest, it’s the kind of brand that I regularly drool over on other blogs and in swanky magazines, but only actually buy from for special events. Having had no special events to prepare for until recently, Their Nibs had completely passed me by.  Continue reading »

Style inspiration from the telly

Thanks to my new Netflix subscription and snazzy iPad to watch it on, I’ve been enjoying more telly than normal recently.

Monday wasn’t a good day for me this week (actually, the whole week has been a bit of a write-off I’m honest), so I did what any normal person would do and went to bed early with my iPad and Katy Perry: Part of Me lined up to view. The (self-proclaimed) Northern Love Machine was surprisingly not in the mood for this film, so it seemed like the perfect time to indulge in a bit of high brow viewing.

The main thing I took from the film? I need to inject a bit more colour into my wardrobe, like KP herself.  Continue reading »

Girls don’t jump in puddles

Wellies

My daughter is three years old. She likes crafting, colouring and anything glittery. She likes reading stories and painting pictures and watching CBeebies.

She also likes jumping in puddles.

It came as a bit of a surprise, then, to see a huge banner on the wall in the kids’ section of a well known shoe store recently. “Because girls love comfort and style, we design both into our shoes” it said. And then, on another wall, “Because boys test their shoes to destruction, so do we”.  Continue reading »
