Netflix shows

Ah Netflix. The parent’s best friend. Gone are the days of clubbing and impromptu drinks at the pub. Instead, a perfect evening now consists of a glass of wine, a hot bubble bath and an episode (or two) of one of my favourite shows on Netflix.

But where to start when it comes to choosing the next series to get addicted to? You’ve watched Breaking Bad and Orange Is The New Black (and if you haven’t, then you should) and now you’re craving something new to sink your TV teeth into.

Fear not my friend, because luckily for you I’m currently a one woman breastfeeding machine who’s spent much of the past five weeks glued to the sofa, baby in one hand, Apple TV remote in the other. Here are my top five addictive shows on Netflix. I’m going to assume you’ve already seen Breaking Bad and OITNB and are up to date with Homeland already… Continue reading »

Do adverts teach kids bad habits?

advertising, children and advertising

Ask any resident of a McCarthy and Stone development, and they’ll tell you that kids’ diets have changed dramatically over the years, with more processed food, E numbers and additives finding their way into our children’s tummies.

Though parents still want their offspring to eat healthily, when it comes to meal times, kids often have other ideas, choosing chips over salad, cheese over greens and covering everything that’s left in gallons of ketchup.

With many different factors affecting kids these days, pinpointing specific food influences can be tough. However, as children watch increasing amounts of TV, adverts are bound to have an impact on their eating fads, potentially teaching them bad habits and setting them up for an unhealthy diet in the future. OITNB

Like the rest of the world, I am a BIG fan of Orange is the New Black. I gorged on both seasons within a fortnight each and, when the last episode was finished, I wondered what I would do with the OITNB shaped hole in my life.

I love the show for the addictive plot lines, strong female characters and incredible writing. But that’s not all. Somewhere into the second series I started to draw some comparisons with the life of the inmates in Orange is the New Black and my own life as a mum.

Stick with me on this one…

5 Ways Orange is the New BLACK is like Parenthood:

1. Sleep in the pitch dark becomes a thing of the past.

My daughter’s scared of the dark. So, like the inmates in OITNB, we sleep with a bright landing light on all the way through the night. In fact, I’ve become so used to sleeping with the light on that I wonder if I, too, am now afraid of the dark.  Continue reading »

Get firm abs while watching Breaking Bad. No, really.

Breaking Bad, exercise, Netflix

It’s no secret that I am not a huge fan of exercise. OK, that may not be strictly true. I love Zumba, look forward to my Yoga classes and enjoy swimming. But at this time of year? When it’s pouring down outside and the cold weather has seeped into my bones? All I really want to do is lie on the sofa watching yet another episode of Breaking Bad.

Recently I joined the Netflix Stream Team. The perfect partner to indulge my love of the sofa, I thought. I received a kit so I could perfect my Netflix viewing, watching Walt and Jessie from my new iPad connected to my TV via a fancy cable. There was even popcorn. Settling down to begin my Netflix marathon I found an email.

#GetFitWithNetflix was the heading. Hang on a minute, I thought. This wasn’t part of the deal. They want me to get fit? I thought Netflix was all about watching my favourite TV shows and films in the comfort of my own home? What’s all this “Get Fit” nonsense?  Continue reading »

Frozen

We went on our first ever family outing to the cinema today. At three and a half years old, it was Frog’s first experience of the big screen. It was exciting, just the three of us, far too much popcorn and sweets and a charmingly old fashioned cinema in a Devon town. We saw Frozen, the latest Disney offering. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it and if you’re looking for something to do on a rainy afternoon, then I urge you to check it out too.

Here are five reasons why we loved Frozen: Continue reading »
