What I’ve learned in two years of marriage

It seems hard to believe that I became a wife two years ago today. So much has happened since our wedding day, but it still feels like it was only last week.

I can remember that day with such clarity; the excitement and anticipation when I woke up in the morning, the lump of emotion that caught in my throat when I put on the wedding dress my mum had made, the look on my dad’s face when he gave his speech.

The thing is, a wedding is about so much more than one day. Our wedding day itself couldn’t have been more perfect, but it’s the last two years being married which have counted for more than any flowers or pretty dresses. Continue reading »

A day in the life of the summer holidays

Sometimes you just need to get out of the house, don’t you?

I love the school holidays. LOVE them. But I’ve been guilty this week of looking forward to my teacher husband being back at work so I can crack on and get some work done myself. In peace and quiet. Without a nagging husband or three year old hassling me for things. Today I made a decision to stop attempting the juggle and get out of the house.  Continue reading »

photo (33)This is a pair of brand new, beautiful new trainers I bought a month ago on impulse, as I vowed to myself to get back into shape. Guess how much I’ve used them?

Yep – none. Zilch, nada. Not one tiny bit.

In fact, they’re still wrapped up all shiny and new in the box, with the price tag firmly attached. Oops.

The thing is, I really WANT to get fit again. I do. I look down at my rounding tummy and see extra wobbles where there weren’t before and it makes me feel, well, a bit flat. (Not flat in the flat stomach sense of the word, unfortunately.) But I just can’t seem to find the time, energy and motivation to do what it takes to get off my backside.  Continue reading »

A letter to my daughter – I’m not moaning

Do you ever find it’s so much easier to talk, blog or write about this parenting lark when things are going wrong?

I look back at my blog posts and at least 8 out of 10 times, I seem to be writing from a point of moaniness (I may have just made that word up).

Although life is far from blue, inspiration often comes in the form of a tantrum or head-desk moment from my three year old. Knowing there are others who have been there and HATING the thought of being one of *those* boasty parents, these tend to be the situations I’ll share.

But then I read this post. And I pulled up short. Continue reading »

Boots – my weakness

Addicted to Boots

I’ve written here before about not being particularly materialistic. When it comes to furniture, I’m happy to opt for second hand and give it a bit of upcycling love. Although Boden kids clothes are my achilles heel, I’m just as content dressing my toddler in the second hand versions rather than the pricey brand new ones. My car is anything but flashy and my coat is not designer.

But. Well, I have a confession to make. I am a bit hooked on boots. Especially the ones on offer at online clothing and shoe store Zalando.

Given five minutes free time on the internet, my eye will immediately wander over to look at pretty boots and trainers, adding more styles to my personalised lists on Shopcade. It’s my new favourite (and very indulgent) hobby. Continue reading »

Facebook

Do you ever feel like you want to take a break from the internet? Ever feel the need to hole yourself away in some kind of peaceful commune, living 1980s style in a land without Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest and Google+, Instagram and blogs?

Because I do.

I’ve been feeling it a lot more recently. Maybe it’s because it seems the entire world is online these days, or maybe it’s because my own particular community of bloggers feels really busy right now. Or maybe it’s because – and this isn’t entirely my fault – I’m simply spending too much time on the internet. Continue reading »

Do you have a flower, mini or fou-fou in your house?

I’d like to talk about vaginas.

Right, now that I’ve got your attention, let me explain.

Frog doesn’t have a vagina. Well, I suppose she does, but we don’t call it that. She’s a girl and everything, without a willy (as her friend, Arthur, likes to point out over and over again) but, until recently her “girl’s parts” didn’t have a name.

We dabbled with “flower” but it didn’t fit. “Mini” enjoyed a short stay in our house too, but was eventually sent packing. For a while it was just, “that bit” or “you know…” until a better way of referring to it came along. Continue reading »
