With some fascinating countries and beautiful island locations to choose from, I can see why going on holiday to a Mediterranean destination is so popular.
If you were to offer me the chance of relaxing on a beach for days on end, occasionally having a quick dip in the sea and treating oneself to a bottle of wine while watching the sun go down, I would pack my suitcase and jump on a plane without hesitation.
Although typical locations like Spain, France, Italy or Greece immediately spring to mind, I never gave Malta much consideration. But following rave reviews from friends who recently visited this tiny island nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean, curiosity got the better of me.
Now I’m actively looking at where to stay and what to do, as the prospect of visiting the delights Malta has to offer inspires me with holiday dreams.
Where to stay
As you can imagine, Malta has a wealth of accommodation available to suit every type of holidaymaker. From boutique apartments and hotels in and around the capital of Valletta to a number of options in northern coastal resort towns of St Julian’s, Buġibba and Mellieħa, the possibilities are somewhat endless.
Across the harbour from the capital is the ancient city of Birgu (Vittoriosa), which hosts some beautiful places to stay. This idyllic and quiet location also looks like a perfect base to explore some of Malta’s finest attractions.
What to do
Once again, the wants and needs of every tourist seem to be covered. Although the glorious sunshine and warm climate will be perfect for some rest and relaxation, I’m eager to discover some of Malta’s historical areas. The island has even been described as a big open-air museum.
Dating back 7000 years, it is possible to retrace the mysterious prehistoric footsteps of St. Paul or see where the Knights of St. John defended Christendom. However, it is reassuring to know that Malta is also home to some more exhilarating activities like water sports, rock-climbing and rambling.
But after a day of exploring and recreation, I’ll be sure to take advantage of a bustling nightlife that boasts some great restaurants and bars.
