Instagram post 2194558656166955175_27126085 This video is an antidote to Insta-envy, if you’re in need of a healthy dose of real life in your feed and a reminder that sometimes the bits that aren’t Insta-perfect are the bits you’ll treasure most and laugh about in years to come. 🎄
Throw back to three years ago today when everything that could have gone wrong on our festive family Christmas tree day, did. 😬
To commemorate what’s become one of our funniest memories and possibly my favourite ever family video, I’ve edited it up into a one minute Insta special. Use it as a reminder that you never know what’s beyond the Insta-frame and that real life is never meant to be perfect. MERRY BLOODY CHRISTMAS 😂🎅🏻🎄 #ItsA7FootTreeMolly #HoHoHo
Instagram post 2193851410856430930_27126085 Perfecting the art of the candid shot. I want them to always take up space and never flinch at a photo. My pictures with the kids are messy and impromptu and fun, because I don’t want them to learn from me that in order to present yourself to the world you need to take 10,000 artfully angled photos to get the one money shot. Life’s too short. As someone who makes a partial income from Instagram that’s probably a golden rule broken right there. But we all know rules are made to be broken, especially when they’re rubbish ones. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Instagram post 2192389989765397078_27126085 You can do a diet, run a diet club, be part of a diet group, pursue an intentional weight loss goal, without having to expose kids to it. So far this week I’ve had multiple DMs from different parents telling me about diet club reps handing out marketing material at the school gates, or hanging banners on school railings. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Research shows a clear link between dieting and disordered eating - experts warn that many cases of eating disorders are triggered by the patient going on a diet. Research also shows the rate of pre-teens developing anorexia has doubled in the last decade. Children as young as five are saying they need to “go on a diet” and another study showed many children are more scared of getting fat than going blind or their parents dying of cancer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Taking all this into account, the fact kids are being exposed to marketing material celebrating weight loss as “inspiring” or equating being thin to being “happy” and “well” is, I’d argue, a safeguarding issue. Kids are being exposed to these messages in the very places they should be safe from harmful body ideals and body shaming ideology. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Many schools are doing brilliant work to promote positive body image within their walls, yet funding cuts and lack of resources mean they need the revenue from hiring out their halls to diet clubs - and many of these clubs come with marketing material to entice new members. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At our first #FreeFromDiets round table discussion last week a @girlguiding member made a brilliant point: why not just put out the A boards 15 minutes before the club starts, so new members know where to go? There really is no justification for these boards and banners being permanently hung outside the schools. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’ll be sharing more outcomes from last week’s meeting soon, as well as a big fundraising plan for the campaign and public facing events for 2020. In the meantime, find out more & sign the petition on the website linked in my bio. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Instagram post 2190217246777196141_27126085 I ordered some new clothes online and wasn’t sure what size to order so I measured myself. And for a second I wobbled. I felt my worth starting to be invested in the numbers on the waistband, and on the tape measure. Because a lifetime of diet culture conditioning and messed up societal body and beauty ideals will do that to a person. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But then I remembered these numbers are arbitrary. They don’t mean anything. They’re simply a measurement of the size of my bones, and flesh and muscle. And one size is no better or worse than another. Because the important stuff - the stuff that isn’t arbitrary - can’t be measured by a number. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s no tape measure that can measure how hard I can make people laugh, or how warm my hugs are, or how passionate and determined I am about the things that matter to me, or how enthusiastic I am when it comes to a kitchen disco. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There is no tape measure to capture how wide my smile is or how fiercely I love those closest to me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And while I can see the size of the vessel carrying my soul, there is no way to measure the grains of gold within it. A soul cannot be measured.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
