It took just two days for the memes to start. The fat jokes nestled innocently amongst pictures of people stockpiling loo roll and singing on balconies, providing all the LOLz to a world quickly succumbing to COVID-19. For many, it seems the one thing worse than getting the virus is getting fat during quarantine.

And in between the memes and the blatant fatphobia there are a million home workouts encouraging us not to use the world crisis as an excuse to “get lazy” (i.e. put on weight) and a million other influencers offering up “immunity boosting” recipes that promise to not only protect you from catching the virus but keep your abs on point too. Diet culture disguised as wellness is nothing new, but you’d think it would give us a break while the world is on its knees.

I rarely come on here at the moment. It's not a planned thing, it's a time thing. Juggling various different projects (all of which I love, but all of which take time!), working many hours a week, leaves little time to create the type of content on here that I'd like. But I couldn't let this month ... read more

You don’t need to strut around shouting I LOVE M You don’t need to strut around shouting I LOVE MYSELF but maybe just avoiding putting yourself down, or shaming your body or talking about diets is a good place to start. .
There’s a whole load of research around this subject, with some studies showing girls as young as five years old are saying they need to “go on a diet” after being exposed to conversations idealising one type of body over another.
.
It’s not rocket science. Our kids learn from us. They look up to us. Whether you’re a parent or a teacher or a big sister or a Scout leader or whatever capacity you’re in around kids - how you talk about yourself will impact how they feel about themselves too.
.
This is one of the areas we discuss in our Body Happy Kids workshops for teachers and youth leaders which we opened for registration last week... and which a whopping 129 people have signed up to already 🎉. All our free places are now gone but you can register for the waiting list for our subsidised places via the link in my bio. .
All kids deserve to know they are enough, and it starts with us. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My body has grown, birthed and fed two babies. It My body has grown, birthed and fed two babies. It has healed from a back injury. It has run and walked and danced for miles. It’s continued to keep going even when I’ve pushed it to its limit in the past - either through exhaustion or not eating enough. My body is MY body, MINE. It’s part of me, my vessel, the thing that moves me from A to B. And I refuse to let anyone or anything try to profit from me feeling like it isn’t enough. ❤️

On the eve of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek I want to On the eve of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek I want to talk about my own mental health of late, cos it hasn’t been too hot. .
This year’s theme for the week is kindness and I realised on Friday night that while I preach self-compassion and I’m good at shutting down my inner critic now, I’m not so good at prioritising my needs above others. It’s not that I’ve been mean to myself, but I haven’t been very kind either. And that’s caused constant low-level anxiety, overwhelm, stress, exhaustion and near burn-out.
.
Since lockdown I’ve continued to work full time (sometimes 50 hours a week) while also homeschooling my two girls. I’ve hit deadlines, taught lessons, given cuddles, joined Zoom meetings, thought up creative ways to make weekends special for my kids, been at the end of the phone for anyone who needs me, responded to a million WhatsApps, interviewed people, been interviewed, replied to thousands and thousands of DMs, done video calls, listened to friends, sent messages to special people, been ON ON ON and AVAILABLE AVAILABLE AVAILABLE for 8 weeks straight without one single day off. So on Friday night I did something important for my health and I took the power back. .
I deleted everything - WhatsApp, Insta, Twitter & Facebook. And after a few hours it no longer felt like multiple tabs in my head were open.
.
We live in a culture that makes us all available 24/7. People think nothing of whizzing out a quick WhatsApp about something that could wait for a phone call or email. Or shooting across a DM when Google exists. And when we are available all the time that creates an expectation that we’ll always be there. But I can’t always be there. I am one woman, and while I can do anything (or try to anyway) I certainly can’t do everything. .
Here’s to more boundaries and proper self-compassion and kindness - to ourselves as much as to others 💕
.
