My daughter is three years old. She likes crafting, colouring and anything glittery. She likes reading stories and painting pictures and watching CBeebies.

She also likes jumping in puddles.

It came as a bit of a surprise, then, to see a huge banner on the wall in the kids’ section of a well known shoe store recently. “Because girls love comfort and style, we design both into our shoes” it said. And then, on another wall, “Because boys test their shoes to destruction, so do we”.  Continue reading »

Ferry vs plane

When we went to Spain back in September we travelled by ferry. It wasn’t the first time I’d travelled by ferry, but it was the first time I’d travelled by ferry as a mum. When we’ve gone abroad as a family before, it’s only ever been by plane.

I will admit I was a tad nervous. I imagined hours at sea, with a child who was bored, tired and grumpy. Compared to a plane, the 24 hour ferry crossing seemed a little intimidating. I mean, what can you do on a boat for 24 hours anyway?

Quite a lot as it turns out. We travelled on board Brittany Ferries’ flagship ship, the Pont Aven. There were restaurants, bars, a cinema and even a swimming pool. We saw dolphins and dined looking at the sea. We ate a three course meal and slept like babies. Far from being an experience to get through with gritted teeth, it proved to be the beginning of the holiday.  Continue reading »
